Does anyone have any info on getting hair permanently straightened or relaxed?

My hair is curly/wavy(if i brush it out it becomes wavy), and I'm thinking of getting it permanently straightened. I've never done anything to alter my hair like coloring it or perming it, but I do straighten it very often with a straightening iron. Despite the straightening, my hair is very soft, silky, and shiny, and is pretty healthy. I never blow dry my hair. My hair reaches about an inch past my shoulders.

I just need some advice on how the above variables will affect getting my hair chemically relaxed or permanently straightened. Also, I need to know whether I should get it chemically relaxed, permanently straightened, japanese straightened, or any other way to permanently straighten my hair.

Unless you have ethnic or mixed hair, then the "relaxer" is out of the question for you. The permanently straightening is going to calm your curl/waves but not a guarantee on wether it is going to make it completely straight for you, I have done it and seen it come out many different ways on clients. I have never done the Japanese straightening technique, but I have seen it on clients after they had had it done, and I will say that it does work. If you do do the Japanese technique though, make sure that you find a salon in the area that is really experienced with the technique due to it is a very strong technique but amazing results. Plus you need to take into consideration that you have "virgin" hair, do you really want to mess it up with chemicals, it will never be the same after you chemically damage it. Plus then you will get roots even with a straightener and then you will have to go and get a retouch to keep your hair straight. So consider then cost and upkeep involved indoing this to your hair.

Um.. I think you should let your hair stay the same.. Dont put all those chemicals in it. My cousin relaxed their hair and she couldn't wait for it to grow back. It doesnt make your hair like permenatly straightend trust me. After a shower its still a little wavy.. i mean you still have to straighten it.

id say u should get a perm, it lasts a good amount of time. but after awhile wen u get outta the shower it will start gettin wavy. the only way the chemicals would affect ur hair, is if u do it perm after perm (thats just to much 4 ur hair) but once every so often wont affect it!

I would not suggest putting a chemical relaxer into your hair type because it will destroy it. It's made for kinky hair and putting it on the texture that you describe will break it off and damage it beyond repair. I would just stick to using a straightening iron occassionally if you want to continue to have soft, silky and shiny hair. The reason that I've decided to wear my hair naturally without any chemicals is because when I relaxed my hair the roots would grow and the end would break off so I stayed at the same length forever. Now it's so damn healthy and sprouting like grass. Just stay away from the chemicals. Having bone straight hair is not worth the damage it will do. Trust me!! Good luck!

Japanese straighter cost a lot of money, and sometimes it takes two visits to finish.

Relaxer are the cheapest way and the easiest to take care of. I get my hair relaxed, and I do it myself.

My hair is soft, shiny and healthily. You just have to keep up the maintenance afterwards.

By adding a hair dressing to your hair. Using products that does not dry out your hair. By wrapping up your hair at night and using a silk scarf and pillow case. Some say now that you can also use satin. Limit your use of over brushing and combing your hair. Stop wearing ponytails. I did all that and my hair thanks me for it.

Yes, I have had some people I know get theirs permanently straightened. It actually only lasts about as long as a perm. The general cost of it would be around $300-$400
