What sort of brush works best for shedding dogs?

I have a two year old Golden Retriever and she is really sheddy... We've tried a shedding blade, and that works really well, but in order to really get all the hair out, I have to brush her hard. That sometimes creates sores on her skin, and they can bleed. What should I do?

The shedding blade works well, especially during a bath, but you do have to be careful not to dig in with it.

A slicker brush works well on the longer coat on the neck and legs.

Some dogs will shed a lot all year round. Make sure you are feeding a good quality food that is "nutritionally complete." I like Nutro - it has no "by products" and is reasonably priced. Have your vet check for intestinal worms - they can cause excessive shedding. Don't bathe her too often - no more than once every four months unless she's rolled in something. When you do, use cool water. Warm or hot water baths make them shed more. Other than that, get a Dyson vacuum!

Dogs can be bathed daily, if necessary! You must use a good shampoo and conditioner and feed a good diet, but bathing won't hurt the coat... Report It

I have a new foundland border collie mix and hes very fuzzy and sheds quite a bit.I just bought one of those ShedEnder combs I saw on tv and it works great. Its small and theres nothing sharp on it that can hurt your dog.It gets the undercoat where all the shedding is taking place.Gilligan actually enjoys being combed out now.

A slicker or a stripper brush.Don't bruch that hard, you may be thinking it more lose fur but it can be attached fur.Sores and bleeding is a big to hard sign.

Personally, if her skin is that sensative, I'd simply take her to the Groomers. They know the proper tools and can help her shed without causing harm.

Another thing I used to do with my dogs is to just run your fingers through her coat and gently tug out any loose hair. If it doesn't come loose, don't force it.

use the wire brissle brush, but do not comb it thru hard. you should never cause sores on her skin. shampoo her more often and use conditioner too. and brush her at least every other day... shedding is also a nutritional issue, she may be shedding for lack of something in her diet. may I suggest getting her onto a premium dog food such as nutro max, or nutro natural choice. both are sold in petsmart and petco, and both relieve skin issues, and are made 100% preservative free, with no cornmeal or barley, so you'll notice less backyard clean up too. also nutro doesn't use chicken by-products at all- meaning no heads, no guts, and no feet. best of all if your pup doesn't like it simply return the unused portion with your receipt to the store, and they refund your money. to find out more about nutro please check out www.nutroproducts.com!

Good luck with the shedding!

We have found a brush commonly known as a "rake" works really well on removing loose undercoat (what the dog is shedding). We have a three year old golden as well as two Corgis and this works well on all of them. We use just a regular brush after the rake to help spread the natural oils in their coats. Be cautious you are not brushing too hard. Brushing is supposed to help remove any shedding hair but also to stimulate the oil glands under their skin to help keep their skin and coats naturally moisturized. Goldens are known for very sensitive skin so we try not to bath often. We find regular gentle brushing help keep his skin and coat beautiful and shiny. (We brush approx. twice a week)

Get a metal toothed comb for double coats - they are found at pet store and work the best in my opinion

A ZOOM GROOM made by Kong. It is rubber and you can push hard or soft. It gets the downy hairs and the course hairs. Works on my dogs.
