21, Female, losing hair?

I am 21 years old and it seems as though my hair is falling out. It is not in clumps, but I notice in the shower about 20 strands of it will come out at a time. At any given time I can brush or tug at my hair and some will come out. I do not think stress is causing this (although it might be perpetuating it!) Any suggestions? Thanks!

As a healthcare provider I would do several bloodtests. I would first suspect your thyroid could be the culprit.

I'm gonna tell you what I told someone else..

alopecia is one cause. Stress is another (It depends on age) ... Hyperthyroidism (deficiency of iodine, but usually fatigue and weakness are following symptoms.)

Also, try looking at your diet. Get Vitamin A, it makes your cells healthy.. this is in fortified milk, eggs, liver, fish oil.

Loss of Vitamin B can result in loss of oxygen to the hair, try eating.. chicken, fish, pork, liver, or soybeans (obviously liver is a big factor)

Although this is rare, people suffer from biotin deficiency, you need to get enough of this in your diet : Liver, yeast breads, cereals, and eggs.

If you are still having problems Vitamin C deficiency can result in hair shedding (this is in seafood and nuts)

And, but of course everyone needs protein.. it helps your hair too: meat, poultry, yogurt, eggs, fish, cheese, and soy products.

Okay, now you should be set to make a grocery list on the foods I provided. Hopefully they help, but if not you really should go see a doctor on the matter.

I'm 31 and also have that problem.

my doctor told me to cut down my stress, take time to relax.

he also told me to take vitamins and check my diet, make sure I'm getting enough of the right foods.

he told me nothing will come over-night,but in time,my hair should start coming back in thicker.

Could be a hormone imbalance or poor diet. I suggest visiting your ob/gyn to check on your hormone levels....also you should start taking daily vitamins. B-complex vitamins are especially great b/c a lot of the B vitamins are good for hair. Also, there are a lot of herbal remedies for hair loss......check out this website and scroll down to Useful Hair Herbs:

There could be lots of things. First if your hair is color treated, bleached, permed, if you blow it dry, use a curling iron or a flat iron, that could cause your hair to break off and appear to be falling out. Another thing is protein, sometimes if you are eating too much protein, it can cause hair to fall out.
